While you may have heard about goiter or know someone suffering from it, having a large mass in the neck does not automatically mean one has the disease. This and other myths are prevalent, especially in this age of quick and accessible medical information. It’s time to check the facts on some of the most common myths about goiter.

Goiter is described as inflammation or swelling of the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland located in the lower front of the neck. The main function of the thyroid gland is to produce hormones that control metabolism, which is how your body uses energy.

Myth: Excessive talking, shouting or singing can lead to goiter.

Fact: Whether you sing or talk too much does not affect the size or condition of the thyroid.

Myth: Eating seafood can stop goiter or cure goiter.

Fact: While seafood is rich in iodine, its intake alone cannot prevent or cure a thyroid condition.

Myth: Goiter can be passed from mother to child.

Fact: Thyroid problems of the mothered may not directly affect the baby, with proper treatment and monitoring.

Myth: Carrots, cabbage and root crops can cause goiter.

Fact: While these contain goitrogens, which can disrupt production of hormones, the intake would have to be in excessive amounts within a short period for goiter to develop.

Myth: Cold drinks are bad if you have goiter.

Fact: Whether your food or drink is hot or cold does not affect the thyroid gland, as it is “not located in the alimentary tract.”

Myth: Goiter can cause infertility.

Fact: Simple goiter “does not affect fertility” of either sex. It is abnormal thyroid function that does.

Myth: Radioactive iodine treatment for goiter/thyroid diseases can cause cancer.

Fact: There is no report or study result that shows it can cause cancer.

Debunking myths about goiter and thyroid diseases should also encourage regular check-ups or if there are symptoms, a visit to an endocrinologist is advised. When there is discomfort or pain, or when the body is not functioning properly, consulting a medical professional is the most basic action to stay on track to every day wellness.
