Have you ever wondered about the B Vitamin group? This family of 8 water-soluble vitamins are one of 13 known vitamins, which contribute to various metabolic processes in our body. On the whole, B vitamins contribute to the body’s production of energy and the well-being of your cells.

Let’s answer the most basic of questions: what are the 8 types of vitamin B and how do they work to keep your body in good condition.

Vitamin B1or Thiamin is known to help the body process glucose into energy, as well as assist in nerve functions. A lack of Vit B1 can lead to some conditions or illnesses such as beriberi or a brain disorder known as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Among the good sources of Vitamin B are yeast, pork, cereal grains, brown rice, asparagus, cauliflower, potatoes, liver and eggs.

Vitamin B2aka Riboflavin is identified with energy production and eye and skin health. It also contributes to cellular energy production. It is found in various food such as banana, milk, eggs, salmon, beef, and vegetables such as okra, asparagus and green beans.

Vitamin B3 or Niacin helps in the conversion of carbohydrates and fat into energy, contributes to skin health and supports nerve functions and digestion. Niacin is found in beef, oysters, clams, chicken, pork, fortified cereals and sunflower seeds.

Vitamin B5or Pantothenic acid is a key component of such processes as metabolizing carbohydrates, proteins and fats, and also helps produce red blood cells. Liver, milk, eggs, meats, and peanuts are all good sources of Vitamin B5.

Vitamin B6 or Pyridoxine has a role in protein and carbohydrate metabolism as well as the in the formation of red blood cells and some brain chemicals. It also “influences brain processes and development, immune function and steroid hormone activity”. This vitamin can be found in green, leafy vegetables, fish and shellfish liver, nuts and fruit.

Biotin or B7 supports various functions including energy metabolism, fat synthesis, amino acid metabolism and glycogen synthesis. The lack of biotin can lead to dermatitis or enteritis, or inflammation of the intestine. Good sources of biotin include liver, egg yolk and selected vegetables.

Folic acid aka folate aka B9 is most known as a required staple for pregnant women because of its ability to help in the fetal nervous system development. Folic acid is also essential to the formation of red blood cells. Foods high in folate include liver and other organ meats, nutritional and brewer’s yeast, and fortified cereals.

Vitamin B12, which is also called cyanocobalamin, is found in liver, meat, milk, cheese and eggs. It supports various body processes including nerve tissue health, brain function and red blood cell productions. Deficiencies in vitamin B12 could result in anemia and neurological problems.

That, in digestible bites, are must-know information about Vitamin B-Group. Armed with these insights, staying healthy and achieving wellness can be done.
