Over a five-year period—2013 to 2018—several lists of top paying medical specialties have been published, reflecting developments in healthcare trends and medical insurance. The highest paying medical specialties indicate the demand for their specialized care, particularly in addressing patients with heart failure, or those with injuries or degenerative diseases involving the muscoskeletal sytem.

 

Top specialties in the US

A 2015 Forbes article lists invasive cardiology, orthopedic surgery and gastroenterology as the best paying in-demand jobs for doctors. The data was based on survey of 3,100 physicians and practitioners in the US.

 

Meanwhile, the Doximity 2018 Physician Compensation Report, which surveyed 65,000 physician respondents, puts neurosurgery, thoracic surgery and orthopedic surgery on top of the rank of physician compensation by medical specialty.

 

Based on various studies, the highest paying medical specialties for consideration are as follows (from highest to lowest): 

  • Cardiology invasive
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Gastroenterology
  • Urology
  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Radiology
  • Pulmonology

 

Ranking in the Philippines

An article published in Insider Monkey, an insider trading and hedge fund website, shows that the most in-demand specialties in the Philippines are invasive cardiology, pulmonology, oncology, nephrology and neurology. The listing puts together data on doctor compensation, as well as the demand for specialists based on the most common diseases.

 

On the other hand, a published infographics from MIMS Today states that the highest paid specialties are cardiology, neurology, and emergency medicine.
