The word CINNAMON triggers images of spice & oils and exotic aromas, but did you know that it also has a long history as a traditional medicine? We explore the other side of this delicious spice, as it has been used for such conditions as gastrointestinal problems, loss of appetite and diabetes.

This highly prized spice is made from the inner bark of the cinnamomum family of trees. Once extracted and dried, these form into rolls or cinnamon sticks, from which cinnamon powder is ground. There are two types, Ceylon cinnamon or “true” cinnamon, and Cassia cinnamon, the more common variety.

The compound cinnamaldehyde, which contributes to the smell and flavor of cinnamon, is the source of cinnamon’s effects on health and metabolism. Among the spices, cinnamon has the most anti-oxidant activity, winning over garlic and oregano.

The earliest records of cinnamon date back to Ancient Egypt. In medieval times, cinnamon was used for treatment of cough, arthritis and sore throat.

Modern-day research has revealed some of the health benefits of cinnamon, and among the conditions that is has been used for are digestive system problems, diabetes, bronchitis. Other studies indicate that it could also be used to treat fungal infections, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and may serve as protection against HIV.

What can cinnamon do for your health and wellness?

  • ANTI-INFLAMMATION. The anti-oxidants in the spice make it a powerful ally against infections and tissue damage.
  • ANTI-HEART DISEASE. Daily intake of cinnamon reduces bad cholesterol and triglycerides levels, helping prevent heart disease.
  • ANTI-DIABETES. Cinnamon aids in lowering blood sugar levels and enabling improved sensitivity to hormone insulin. It also helps slow down the absorption of sugar in the blood, after a heavy meal.
  • ANTI-BRAIN DISORDER. The antioxidants in cinnamon have been found to block protein build-up that may lead to or aggravate Alzheimer’s disease.
  • ANTI-INFECTION. The essential oils in cinnamon contain “immune-boosting compounds” which help defend the body from infections and disease.
  • ANTI-SKIN ALLERGY. Cinnamon oil can treat inflammation, swelling and redness, while a combination of cinnamon and honey can be used to address problems of acne, rosacea and skin allergies.
