Drinking enough fluid is a must to stay alert and productive.

Water is as essential to the body as oxygen, as every cell and muscle of the body needs water to function properly. Water also keeps joints lubricated, secures tissues, and helps eliminate waste.[1] It likewise helps maintain body temperature, prevents constipation, aids in absorbing nutrients from food, ensures good circulation and boosts metabolism and energy levels.[2]

Replenishing the body’s water supply is a daily priority as it is estimated that we lose around 1720ml or approximately 7-8 cups of water from the regular functions such as breathing or sweating.[3]

To make sure our body gets back what it loses, intake of beverages and foods that contain water is recommended. While water is the first choice for hydration, there are other sources of fluid, including tea and coffee, sugar-free drinks and low-fat milk.[4]

Here are some tips on how to stay hydrated and healthy.

  • Bring a water bottle to have a ready source of water anywhere you go.
  • Be conscious about the amounts of water you take to ensure that you reach the daily level required.
  • Drink water before, during and after exercise and other strenuous physical activities.
  • Take water with meals and between meals.
  • Moderate alcohol consumption as it can lead to dehydration.
  • Add lemon or cucumber for a little flavor.
  • Start the day with a cup of water, and keep a glass by your bedside at night.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables in every meal.

Water is an essential to achieve wellness, and with summer and other water concerns upon us, putting these tips to good use could make you healthier and more energetic. So fill up with water today!
